چکیده

[1] The return-stroke propagation speeds of five strokes from a seven-stroke triggered lightning flash are measured, with a 2 ns sampling interval, using a vertical array of photodiodes. Various methods for determining the reference point to be tracked are explored, and the speed is seen to vary over nearly an order of magnitude depending upon which method is chosen. The speeds are generally in agreement with the values found in the literature. The return-stroke speed appears to increase with height and then decrease with height in four of the five strokes examined.

A comparison of channel-base currents and optical signals for rocket-triggered lightning strokes

A comparative analysis has been performed of the channel-base current and light waveforms for four rocket-triggered lightning strokes. It has been found that the current and light signals at the bottom of the channel exhibit a linear relationship (direct proportionality) in their rising portions. However, just after the peaks the linearity disappears, and the light signals usually decrease fast...

Lightning Properties Inferred from Measurements of Very Close Electric Fields

Lightning properties including dart -leader charge density, return-stroke propagation speed, dart -leader electric potential, and dart-leader propagation speed, inferred from current and close electric field measurements are presented. Although all estimates presented here are based on rather crude models, they are generally in remarkably good agreement with independent measurements and/or theo...

Test of the transmission line model and the traveling current source model with triggered lightning return strokes at very close range

[1] We test the two simplest and most conceptually different return stroke models, the transmission line model (TLM) and the traveling current source model (TCSM), by comparing the first microsecond of model-predicted electric and magnetic field wave forms and field derivative wave forms at 15 m and 30 m with the corresponding measured wave forms from triggered lightning return strokes. In the ...

Return stroke peak current versus charge transfer in rocket‐triggered lightning

[1] We examined data on 117 return strokes in 31 rocket‐and‐wire‐triggered lightning flashes acquired during experiments conducted from 1999 through 2004 at the International Center for Lightning Research and Testing at Camp Blanding, Florida, in order to compare the peak currents of the lightning return strokes with the corresponding charges transferred during various time intervals within 1 m...

Measurements of x-ray emission from rocket-triggered lightning

[1] We report measurements of the x-ray emission from rocket-triggered lightning, made during the summer of 2003, using four instruments placed between 15 and 40 m from the lightning channels. X-rays were measured 0–80 ms just prior to and at the beginning of 73% of the 26 return strokes observed. The emission was composed of multiple, very brief bursts of x-rays in the 30–250 keV range, with e...
